A call to help shape the kind of South Africa that you would be proud of

An exciting possibility is in your hands:

  • Help shape South Africa!
  • ‘South Africa Day’ will be celebrated as a non-public holiday annually on the second Saturday of November.
  • South Africa Day is intended to celebrate our country, to inspire everyone to participate in building the country of our dreams and aspirations and to bring a renewed sense of optimism, excitement and pride in being a South African.

You can help do this, right now, by helping write a South Africa Day Pledge because you are invited to submit a proposal for the pledge.

Imagine yourself standing with a group of fellow South Africans together reciting a pledge to that group and your country.

  • What would you say?
  • What would you be able to truly commit yourself to?
  • What do you think would inspire hope, optimism and pride in our country by all its people?

Write all this down and see whether you can craft a wonderful pledge that you and all South Africans could recite with true commitment and pride.

Look at the list below as a guide when crafting the South Africa Day Pledge.

It should do the following:

  • Reinforce a sense of loyalty to and pride in our country.
  • Inspire the people of South Africa to achieve greatness and a future we can all work towards.
  • Promote nation building and express what is special about South Africa.
  • Reflect the type of behaviour or conduct that would contribute to the kind of society that we want South Africa to become.

The pledge should meet the following requirements:

  • Be embraced by all South Africans and give a full expression of what the people of South Africa want for their country, and how they want to be seen as country.
So maybe try to do the pledge with a group of friends, your family or your class.
  • Be forward looking and serve as a foundation for building a successful nation.
  • Not be long, and people must be able to recite it.
Submissions should be in English, but the winning contribution will be translated into all official languages.
