Dear Members of the Community in Sophiatown,

The launch of this initiative in Sophiatown will begin on 12 October 2024, from 8:30 to 11:30.

It forms part of a broader nationwide ‘Cleaning and Beautification of South Africa’ programme. The initiative in Sophiatown has been made possible by a newly established Steering Committee that is driving the process.
Each community, town, and city across South Africa will be embarking on a similar clean-up and beautification. The Sophiatown launch will involve the actual, hands-on cleaning and beautification of the neighbourhood.

The ‘Cleaning and Beautification of South Africa Initiative’ is a direct response to the plea that was made to the nation by our President Cyril Ramaphosa to clean and beautify the country, following the example of other nations, such as Rwanda.
The initiative has the full support of President Cyril Ramaphosa, and the President has also indicated to South Africa Day that he would be taking part, hands-on, in the cleaning and beautification initiatives.

The initiative will be a year-long programme with clean-up and beautification activities that will take place on the second Saturday of each month, for three hours, from 8:30 am to 11:30 am.

By coming together in great numbers with your friends and families to take part in this important initiative, members of the community will make all the difference in what we are trying to achieve and will contribute to its success. We will be immensely grateful for your support and participation.
And you will be able to see first-hand the benefits of your efforts, as together we transform Sophiatown into a cleaner, safer and more attractive neighbourhood.

Please note that we are inviting business and government leaders to join us and to take part in the launch.

The following areas have been earmarked for cleaning and beautification during the launch:

1) Sophiatown Extreme Park – it is along Edward Road, opposite the Sophiatown Shopping Centre.
2) Main Road – starting in front of South Bakels and moving in the direction of Sophiatown Police Station or JMPD & EMS Head Office.
3) Edward Road.
